1 What is News Management?
1.1 News site management
This term covers all of the tasks associated with setting up and maintaining
news software on your system, getting your site hooked into the news
distribution system, and serving as a contact person for your site in matters
pertaining to news. If you plan to run only as an NNTP client, this involves
just a little work -- at a minimum, you need only build News.Exe and News.Hlb.
If you're planning to set up a local database and exchange news with other
sites, there's more configuration and site preparation to be done.
In general, the news manager at a site running ANU News will
-
maintain the News software -- this may involve building News from
distributed source files, getting updates or patches as necessary, dealing with
users' problems with News, and following discussion on the newsgroup
news.software.anu-news to keep up with changes inNews.
-
manage the site's configuration -- this includes maintaining the
configuration files used by News, creating and modifying newsgroups, and
setting up the disk space News uses to store news items.
-
manage news traffic -- this covers making arrangements with neighboring
sites to exchange news, monitoring traffic and correcting any problems which
may develop, and keeping track of resources used by News, to insure that it
doesn't become overloaded, run out of space, etc.
This list may seem daunting at first, but it's actually not all that hard,
expecially after you've finished setting up, and that's what this manual's for.
Once you're up and running, News is pretty stable, so keeping an eye on
routine operation doesn't require much effort.
