The Dictionary of the Mushroom

This is a short dictionary of mushroom-related English words, an accompaniment to "Wild mushrooms: how to find, cook and eat them -- and survive!".
gills:
the structure on the underside of the cap (pileus) where the spores develop; d on the figure below
mycelium:
the thalus or vegetative portion of a fungus, consisting of threadlike tubes, or hypae; "roots" of the mushroom; e on the figure below
pileus:
the cap or expanded umbrella-shaped portion of the mushroom; a on the figure below
stipe:
the stem supporting the cap of a mushroom; b on the figure below
velum:
a thin membranous covering enveloping young mushrooms; remnants of velum may form a ring (cb on the figure below) or spots on Rdeca musnica
