Established in 1872, the Maribor College of Viticulture is the oldest educational institution of its kind in Slovenia. Theoretical studies are complemented by practical experience in the college's own vineyards on the steep sites of Kalvarija. The annual yield of their nine hectares (22.2 acres) suffices for the production of up to 60,000 liters (15,852 gallons) of outstanding wines. They grow only white grapes traditional to the Maribor area: Laski Rizling, Renski Rizling, Sauvignon, Beli Pinot, Rumeni Muskat, and Chardonnay. The college maintains its own nursery, producing sapling for their own research and for sale to growers of the area.
Research and education being its primary goals, the college's modern cellar employs a number of different winegrowing techniques, producing small quantities of immaculately processed wines. Kalvarijcan is their noted blended wine in the high-quality range. Among their wide range of high- quality varietal wines, Renski Rizling is consistently the best. The college regularly prepares izbor, suhi jagodni izbor, and Ice wines.
The best of their wines are stored in the college archives; the most special is probably the 1992 Renski Rizling Ice Wine.
The best vintages from the Maribor College of Viticulture are 1986, 1989, 1992, and 1993. Unfortunately, the college's wines are produced only in small quantities and are very hard to find in the shops.
