Stojan Scurek is one of the best known winegrowers of the Brda area. He cultivates ten hectares (24.7 acres) of vineyards - mostly his own, some leased - and 80% of his vines are on the Italian side of the border. His sites near Medana are on the very locations where the soils change from the marl of Brda to the clay of the Friulian plain. Stojan Scurek has grapevines on both sides of this divide, which makes selection of his grapes and wines quite varied.
Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon are Scurek's dominant red grapes, and he also grows some Modri Pinot. Sivi Pinot is first among his white wines, followed by Chardonnay, Rebula, and Tokaj. Scurek is one of the few winegrowers in Brda who still grows some very old types of grapevine: Bula, Pika Glera, and Trzanka are almost forgotten names.
From an annual yield of ninety tons of grapes, Stojan Scurek produces six hundred hectoliters (15,852 gallons) of wine. Bula, Pika Glera, and Trzanka are blended with Rebula and Sauvignon to produce Stara Brajda, a table wine that is sold open and can be tasted only in Scurek's own cellar and some neighbouring inns.
Scurek's Chardonnay, Beli Pinot, Sivi Pinot, Sauvignon, and Rebula are all respected varietal wines in the high-quality range. Since 1990 the winery has also offered barrique Chardonnay and Merlot.
Scurek has won a number of awards for his wines: his most successful year was 1991 when his Chardonnay, Beli Pinot, Sauvignon, and Sivi Pinot were honored at the Ljubljana Wine Fair.
1983, 1990, and 1994 are the best vintages of the Scurek winery.
