WINEGROWING AREA: Vipava

The Rikot estate has been growing grapes and making wine for decades but only began marketing wine in bottles with its own brand name in 1989. Of the estate's ten hectares (24.7 acres), six hectares (14.8 acres) are planted with grapevine.

The Rikot vineyards are in the central Vipava Valley around Dornberk. The weather can be particularly unpredictable here, and their annual yield varies from a dismal fifteen tons to 55 tons of grapes.

Merlot is the winery's priority, and its annual production is 2000 to 5000 liters (528 to 1321 gallons). It also produces one thousand liters (264 gallons) of Barbera.

White wines comprise the majority of the production: 1000 to 2000 liters (264 - 528 gallons) each of Laski Rizling and Zelen, and somewhat less of Beli Pinot, Prosecco, Rumeni Muskat, Rebula, and Malvazija.

All Rikot wines achieve the high-quality range. Merlot is the most successful, both "regular" and rosé - the latter is produced when the wine of previous vintage still occupy the barrels. Sauvignon and Beli Pinot are their best white wines.

The best Rikot vintages are 1990, 1992, and 1993.
