KZ Krško is one of the few Slovene wine cooperatives that produces more red than white wines. They cultivate seventy hectares (173 acres) of vineyards on Zavode, Drenovec, Vinji Vrh, Ročke, and Gadova Peč. Žametna Črnina is their dominant grapevine, followed by Modra Frankinja; their most important white wines are Laški Rizling and Kraljevina, the latter being a rather rare variety grown only in the Posavje region.
The vineyards of KZ Krško yield six hundred tons of grapes in average years, and a further 2500 tons are purchased from contract growers. Twenty thousand hectoliters (528,400 gallons) of wine are produced annually; 80% is the Cviček blend of table wine and quality range. Their cellaring techniques are both traditional and modern: in the new cellar in Leskovec, Cviček is fermented and matured in aged oak barrels while white wines occupy stainless steel vats.
The grapes for their Cviček come exclusively from sites in the Dolenjska area, the fruit for high- quality wines made from Modra Frankinja and Laški Rizling is mostly grown on sites in the neighbouring Bizeljsko-Sremič area. KZ Krško produces one thousand hectoliters (26,420 gallons) of high-quality wines annually, including wines of special quality.
Their Modra Frankinja 1983 won the Grand Gold medal at the Ljubljana Wine Fair. Laški Rizling is their champion with a number of Grand Gold medals: late harvest 1986, izbor 1991, and suhi jagodni izbor 1993. Their Jagodni izbor Sauvignon 1992 won the gold medal in 1993.
The best vintages from the KZ Krško cellars are 1983, 1986, 1991, 1992, and 1993.
