WHITE WINES: beli pinot, chardonnay,  šipon, laški rizling, traminec, renski rizling
WINEGROWING AREA: Radgona-Kapela

The Kapela Winery's 172 hectares (425 acres) of vineyards lie on such excellent sites as Rožički Vrh, Kališčak, and Murščak. The soils in this part of Radgona-Kapela are somewhat heavier and contain more clay, tending to retain moisture better so the grapevines are less likely to suffer from drought. The winery produces 1200 tons of grapes in its own vineyards, and a further 130 tons are purchased annually from neighbouring growers.

The Kapela winery specializes in white varieties, Laški Rizling being dominant. They also produce Šipon, Beli Pinot, Chardonnay, Traminec, and other white wines.

Traminec occupies less than 5% of Kapela's vineyards, but some of it comes from the 1.8 hectare (4.45 acres) of the oldest Traminec vines in Slovenia. As forty years is a venerable age for a grafted grapevine, the yield from this vineyard is rather low; however, the Kapela winegrowers maintain it produces a more balanced wine with a particularly gentle aroma.

Two thirds of Kapela's production is Kapelčan, a quality blend of Beli Pinot and Chardonnay. The rest is high-quality varietal wines.

Traminec - not only the one from the oldest vineyard - is consistently among the best in Slovenia. The wine from Kapela is somewhat less aromatic than the Traminec from Gornja Radgona, less sweet and somewhat stricter, with a characteristic varietal bouquet. Chardonnay, Renski Rizling, and Sauvignon also consistently achieve high-quality level.

The Kapela cellar is also quite famous for its late harvests and izbor of Chardonnay and Traminec.

Božično Vino or Christmas Wine is made from grapes harvested on Christmas Day; the wine is labeled as jagodni izbor, although it usually achieves at least suhi jagodni izbor or even Ice Wine quality, depending on the weather. This is a semi-sweet dessert wine, available only in very limited quantities.

Wines from Kapela have won five Grand Gold medals at the Ljubljana Wine Fair. The cellar maintains an archive where some 20,000 of their best bottles are stored; some of them can be purchased at the archive shop.

     The best Kapela vintages are 1983, 1986, 1989, 1990, and 1993.
