The estate of Franc and Vlado Kupljen has a long viticultural tradition, but they began bottling their own wines only in 1988. The Kupljens cultivate ten hectares (24.7 acres) of vineyards, eight of their own and two hectares on leased sites. They grow only white grapes characteristic of their area of the Podravje region: Sipon, Laski Rizling, Renski Rizling, and Traminec comprise the majority of their production.
The main Kupljen sites face southwest on Brezovnik, Rakusovo, and Karbusovo; these are very sunny locations, and the wines from these vineyards are rich and quite strong.
Chardonnay, Traminec, and Laski Rizling are Franc and Vlado Kupljen's best wines. Since 1991 they have produced late harvest Renski Rizling and Chardonnay and izbor Beli Pinot and Traminec - - these wines are sweeter and display a particularly rich taste. Their Chardonnay 1993 won a gold medal at the Ljubljana Wine Fair.
The best Kupljen vintages are 1991 and 1993.
