The MarkoviŸ family winery deserves a place of honour in every review of Slovene winegrowers, if only for one of their wines. Their specialty is Pikolit, not the passito-style wine made from dried grapes that frequently bears a similar name but the real thing: the varietal wine made from this rare white grape.
The MarkoviŸ's Pikolit is simply majestic, but unfortunately very rare. In ideal circumstances, 150 to 200 grapevines are required to produce some fifty liters (13.21 gallons), and in bad years the yield is nil. Their best vintage was 1993, and the wine was offered in special bottles designed by Oskar Kogoj for the 300th anniversary of the birth of the famous composer and violinist Giuseppe Tartini.
The MarkoviŸ family winery also produces Rebula, Tokaj, Chardonnay, and Malvazija, the first two being their most successful wines with a number of awards.
