Stanko Amon was the first among Slovene vignerons to make a special effort to promote Šmarje-Virštajn wines in the quality and high-quality range. Amon's lovely estate in Olimje is regarded as one of the centers of viniculture in the area.
Amon cultivates 6.5 hectares (16 acres) of vineyards in Virštajn sites around Vinski vrh. The average density of 2800 vines per hectare (1133 per acre) is not high for these sunny locations, so Amon's wines are rich and aromatic. Among red wines, Modra Frankinja and the traditional Žametna Črnina are the predominant varieties. Most of the white vines are Laški Rizling, Chardonnay, and Sauvignon; Zeleni Silvanec is well represented in younger vineyards. Amon's vineyards yield sixty tons annually on average, and the winery purchases a further 370 tons from neighbouring growers.
Amon's promotion of two of the area's blends, the red and white Virštajnčans, made them popular outside the area. However, Amon's own excellent Virštajnčans will rarely be found outside the area: these wines are very popular with the locals and should be sampled at Amon's estate or neighbouring inns.
Amon has been bottling his wines since 1983. His offering in the quality and high-quality range also includes varietal Laški Rizling, Sauvignon, and Renski Rizling.
