The president represents Slovenia and is at the same time the supreme commander of the defence forces. The president calls elections to the National Assembly, proclaims laws adopted by the National Assembly and proposes a candidate for prime minister. The President of the Republic is elected for a term of five years and may serve no more than two consecutive terms.
In April 1990 Milan Kucan (1941- ) was elected in the first democratic post-war elections in Slovenia as President of that time Presidency of the Republic of Slovenia. He was elected president of the state in the elections in December, 1992.
