ABOUT THE WORKSHOP

Since its launch in 1975, k0-based reactor neutron activation analysis (NAA) has attracted an increasing number of scientists to explore and evaluate its potentials; nowdays it is in operation in many laboratories throughout the world. After requests from several researchers in the field of NAA, and following the "Special Session on k0" at the 8th Modern Trends in Activation Analysis Meeting (Vienna, September 1991), the first "k0 Users Workshop - Gent" was organized by the Institute for Nuclear Sciences (Lab. of Anal. Chem.) of Gent University in 1992. The meeting was attended by 51 scientists from 14 countries. At that meeting, it was decided to establish periodic meetings of scientists in the field of k0-based NAA, and in 1995 an International Scientific Committee (k0-ISC) was formed to maintain the high scientific level of contributions and co-ordinate activities in organizing further Workshops. The Second k0 Users Workshop will be held in Ljubljana, Slovenia, from Monday 30 September to Thursday 3 October 1996, and will be organized by the Jozef Stefan Institute. The Workshop programme will include several keynote lectures, followed by short oral presentations with ample time for discussion. There will be no parallel sessions. As usual, English will be the official language of the Workshop. Computers for software presentations will be available, depending on interest.

SCIENTIFIC PROGRAMME

The scientific programme is aimed at creating intensive and interactive discussions between colleagues who are actively involved and interested in k0-based NAA, either in its fundamental improved versions and extensions, or its actual (or planned) applications.

Topics:

General developements
Nuclear data
Prompt-gamma NAA
Software developments and presentations
Neutron spectrum characterization
Applications
K0 - NAA implementation
Ge - detector characterization

PUBLICATION OF PAPERS

Abstracts

A copy of the Book of Abstracts will be provided to each participant on arrival at the Workshop.

Proceedings

Proceedings will be published by the Jozef Stefan Institute, Ljubljana, and a copy will be sent to each participant after the Workshop. The Proceedings will consist of extended summaries of no more than four pages (each within a frame of 160 x 240 mm). The extended summaries in both camera-ready as well as electronic form (ASCII, MS Word, Word Perfect) should be handed to the Secretariat on arrival at the Workshop.

GENERAL INFORMATION

Venue and Accomodation

The Workshop will be held in hotel SLON located in the very centre of Ljubljana (the Capital of Slovenia, 300 000 inhabitants). Living accomodation in Ljubljana ranges from 100 ECU/night (four star hotel) to 30 ECU/night (limited). Accompanying persons are welcome.

Social Programme

Wellcome Reception:
All participants are cordially invited to the wellcome party to be held at Ljubljana Castle on Monday, 30 September.
Excursion and Dinner:
A half-day bus trip to Postojna Cave and Predjama Castle will be organized on Wednesday, 2 October. The excursion is scheduled from 13.30 (departure) to 22.00 (arrival to Ljubljana). Postojna cave is one of the largest and most readily accessible caverns in the world. An electric train takes the visitors to its deepest recesses. The dripstone-stalactites, stalagmites, columns, pillars and translucent curtains conjure up unforgettable images. The subterranean waters, which gouged out these galleries, are also the natural habitat of a singular dweller of the darkness, Proteus Anguinus. Suitable shoes are recommended.

Registration fee

If paid before June 28, 1996, a fee of 220 ECU will be charged to full participants to help defray organizational costs. The fee includes the Final Programme, the Book of Abstracts, refreshments, an excursion, Workshop Dinner, and the Proceedings (to be mailed after the Workshop). Accompanying persons are cordially invited and can register for the excursion/dinner for 90 ECU, if paid before June 28, 1996. If paid after June 28, the fees will be 270 ECU and 110 ECU for full participants or accompanying persons, respectively. The organizing committee is seeking for financial support from various institutions and commercial companies to provide some assistance to PhD students who have difficulties in obtaining funds for attending the Workshop. Payment may be made by bank transfer (draft) to:
