5 Setting Up News as a Local Reader/Server

In this configuration, News maintains local copies of all news items available to your users. These files, referred to as the local News database, are kept current by exchanging new items with other sites on the net, and by removing old items from the local store as they reach their expiration date. You can also use News in this configuration as a conferencing tool to manage discussion groups among users at your site, either alone or in addition to carrying network newsgroups. These local newsgroups are often superior to mailing lists, since they allow you to keep only one copy of each message in a central location, and they provide an overview of recent items in a thread which a user might not have retained in his or her mail file.
